While the titanium zinc cladding of the roof and facade is in good condition and has acquired a fine patina, the timber frame windows needed to be renovated. The intervention in the interior focussed on the bathrooms and the guest lavatory. The colour concept, which is based on the use of just two colours (one in several hues) in each of the rooms, aims at creating an unmistakable atmosphere.

The partly defective timber windows were replaced by triple glazed wood and metal windows. The height of the sliding element (3.3 metres) in the living room and the corner details presented a special challenge. Custom-made detailing allowed the width of the new frames to be kept to a minimum so that they match the original windows. Changes in the residents’ needs required that the bathrooms be completely redesigned. It was particularly important that they should be easy to clean. In the bathroom on the upper floor all the built-in units are made of white solid surface material and mounted without joints. In combination with the white walls this creates a calm, harmonious entity. Against this monochrome background the grey oiled oak parquet flooring makes a particularly lovely impression. In contrast to the bathrooms the guest lavatory on the ground floor receives no daylight. To harmonise with the existing flooring of dark grey granite slabs the wall surfaces are finished in mid-grey. Only the area above the lower wall cladding (which is also a solid surface material) is treated differently by giving it a coat of gold paint. Together with the indirect lighting this creates an elegant atmosphere in what was previously a plain and sober room.
